Amrita Ahuja, chief financial officer and chief operating officer of Block, said on October 13 that companies will begin placing AI agents directly on their organizational charts, with employees responsible for training and deploying them. She spoke at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit in Santa Barbara, Calif., in an interview with Fortune senior writer Sheryl Estrada.

Ahuja said a handful of companies are already doing it, and that agents, like people, "need to be developed over time," requiring context, information and goals that shift. Her comments followed job cuts earlier in 2026 at Block, where chief executive Jack Dorsey eliminated 40% of the workforce as part of a restructuring tied to wider use of AI to automate work. Global AI spending is expected to top $730 billion in 2026, according to Fortune.

Shelagh Glaser, chief financial officer of Synopsys, said her company is being deliberate about where AI money goes, and that costs were manageable until they were not. Michelle Zatlyn, cofounder, president and board co-chair of Cloudflare, said giving thousands of employees access to building tools has surfaced unexpected internal talent. Heather Zorn, an Amazon vice president for customer experience products and services, said the company tracks adoption, engagement and efficiency, but that revenue growth is the only measure that matters.
